Keeping a dog busy indoors

Some days it's just too wet, too windy or too dark for a long walk. Sniffing and licking are natural, calming activities for dogs, and ten minutes of either can take the edge off a short-walk day.

  • Snuffle mats hide treats in fabric strips so your dog has to sniff them out.
  • Lick mats spread with a little dog-safe food keep a dog busy for a good while, longer if you freeze them first.

Always supervise, and take the mat away once it's finished or if your dog starts chewing it.

Rainy days: your questions

What can I put on a lick mat?

Small amounts of dog-safe foods such as plain yoghurt, wet dog food or xylitol-free peanut butter. Never use anything containing xylitol (birch sugar), which is toxic to dogs.
